There will soon be a new community forest in the Northeast Kingdom. The town of Canaan has taken ownership of 424 acres of land to create the Canaan Community Forest.

The town of Barre is receiving federal grant money secured by Sen. Patrick Leahy and the U.S. Forest Service to acquire forest land in Washington County.

A conservation group working to block an electrical project from Canada into southern New Hampshire is seeking to disrupt the project by paying for conservation easements.

But the downturn in the economy has also meant, in some places, a drop in land values, and that's creating new opportunities to preserve land and curb development.
