There will soon be a new community forest in the
Northeast Kingdom. The town of Canaan has taken ownership of 424 acres of land to create
the Canaan Community Forest.
The town of Barre is receiving federal grant money secured by Sen. Patrick Leahy and the U.S. Forest Service to acquire forest land
in Washington County.

conservation group working to block an electrical project from Canada into southern New Hampshire is seeking to disrupt the project by paying for conservation
easements.
Two local conservation groups worked with the
Upper Valley Land Trust to buy more than 300 undeveloped acres of forest on the southern slope of Mount Ascutney.
States are facing tough decisions about where to invest their shrinking
budgets. In most cases protecting open space is not at the top of the list. But the downturn in the economy has also meant, in some places, a drop
in land values, and that’s creating new opportunities to preserve
land and curb development.
