A search for a new Vermont education secretary has been narrowed to four finalists. About 30 candidates applied for the post.

Lawmakers this year passed a bill that elevates the state's Education commissioner to a cabinet level position.

The Vermont House is considering legislation that would change the way the Department of Education is structured. Currently, it is an autonomous entity not attached to a state agency. That means the Governor does not have the ability to name its Commissioner.

Even with Governor-elect Peter Shumlin's decision to use $19 million in federal stimulus for Vermont schools, districts will still face difficult funding choices next year. 

The chairman of the Vermont State Board of Education is stepping down. Tom James, a retired IBM executive, has served a six-year term on the board and will attend his final monthly meeting on September 15th.
