Gov. Peter Shumlin said on Wednesday the state shouldn’t collect $6 million that the
auditor’s office says several towns owe to the state education fund.
Planners looking to boost downtowns around the state have been focusing on home
grown stores that specialize in fresh produce and local products. In Barre, a group hopes a new co-operative grocery store will revive the city’s central business district.
The state has given Barre authority to establish a special tax district that’s
designed to help the city pay for public works that will attract economic
development.
Environmental officials
and emergency responders say a failure in hose at a Barre gas station
led to the leak of as much as 3,000 gallons of gasoline into the ground.
Cities and towns in Vermont say Washington needs to deal with the coming fiscal cliff quickly because it could hurt their budgets and lead to another
recession.
Storm-weary cities and towns across the state continued to prepare for Hurricane
Sandy Monday afternoon, as they closely monitor the path of the massive storm.
Representatives
of Granite City Grocery are
rolling out a membership drive this week to sign up 600 founding members by
next spring in an effort to help revitalize Barre’s downtown.
The state has awarded $1.8
million in tax credits to help downtown revitalization projects. The Shumlin administration
says the credits will support nearly $26 million dollars of building
improvements in 17 communities around Vermont
